Ezekiel 41:6 (KJV)
And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.
Any number of commentators admit the Ezekiel chapters 40-48 are the most difficult of the Bible. We find here Ezekiel’s description of the prophetic temple. This was meant to encourage those captive Jews of God’s grand intentions for them. They need not fear God had forsaken them. He had plans bigger than anything they had before known. These were, of course, not fulfilled in the second temple or even in Herod’s temple. This is a vision of eternity.
I am intrigued by the phrase, “that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.” These were walls that held on to something other than the temple walls. They run parallel to the temple walls, but they are not connected to them.
God has another work that is related to the work He does with the Jews. It runs alongside His plans for the Jews, but it is not the same as His plans for the Jews. Israel and the church are not two sides of the same coin. Israel and the church are two coins in God’s same pocket. They are related. They are in some ways similar. But one does not replace the other.
