And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.
Abraham is a pre-law figure. As such he teaches us much about faith, giving, worship, patience, sojourning in a strange land, and etc. Jews and Muslims both claim him as their spiritual father. I believe the New Testament establishes Abraham as the father of those that believe.
That said, notice he had “trained servants.” John Gill says they were, “trained up by him in religious exercises, in the affairs and business of civil life, in the care of flocks and herds, and particularly in the art of war…”
As an example of the faith life of the New Testament believer Abraham teaches us the importance of training and discipline:
- In our faith and practice
- In our means of commerce and income and
- In this case, our ability to defend ourselves and our family
The Christian life is meant to be a disciplined life. Exercise some discipline in the skills of self-defense.
