Numbers 31:8 (KJV) He Failed the Fine Line

Numbers 31:8 (KJV)
And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.

Balaam attempted to walk this very fine line between obeying God and enjoying the rewards of worldliness. Although the Bible never says that he cursed Israel, it does say that he taught Israel to sin in compromise.[1] It also says he lived for reward.[2] Here it says he died with the Midianites.

To stand with God means to separate from the world. It is not possible to be a friend of this world and a friend of God at the same time.

[1] Revelation 2:14 (KJV)
But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

[2] Jude 1:11 (KJV)
Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
