Matthew 12:3 (KJV) Have Ye Not Read?

Matthew 12:3 (KJV)

But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;

I understand that that are a great many lessons to be gleaned from this chapter and the confrontation between Jesus and the Pharisees. One of the great lessons is the necessity of the reading of the Word of God.

Jesus based all of His answers to the objections of the Pharisees upon the Scriptures. He asked them, “Have ye not read…?” And again in verse 5, “Or have ye not read…?” He knows of course that they had.

Someone might object here that these were Pharisees. He knew they had read the Word of God, but most people have not. What about them? I think the basis of our answers to them ought to be the same except we would rephrase, “It is written…”

The Pharisees had read. That does not mean they had understood. Our place is to get alone with the Lord and the Holy Spirit, then get together with the people of God in our church and learn the Word of God. It will strengthen our faith and it will give us the answers we need for those who object to our Christian manner of life.
