The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
When the serpent tempted Eve with “Yea hath God said…?” Eve’s response was to overstate the Lord, Genesis 3:2-3 (KJV)
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Our text here demonstrates the same propensity both in the Pharisees and then in Jesus’ disciples, Matthew 19:3 (KJV)
… Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
Matthew 19:7 (KJV)
…Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
Matthew 19:10 (KJV)
… If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
It has been my experience that, when reacting to the Word of God, people very often overstate the Word of God, making it appear harsh and unreasonable. The problem is compounded by the fact that, when we are called upon to defend the Word of God, and sometimes simply to proclaim it, we too can overstate God’s intent. Imagine then a debate where the position is overstated and then the argument is overstated beyond that.
God is loving, just, wise, and good.
If we will take a breath, step back, and let God speak through His Word, we will discover His commands are quite sensible and in no way grievous.
