1 Samuel 3:1 (KJV) Let Them Serve

1 Samuel 3:1 (KJV)
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

There are three things this chapter clearly tells us:

  • That Samuel was, at this time, a child
  • That Samuel did not yet know the Lord and yet
  • That Samuel ministered unto the LORD

We have here one of those “chicken or the egg” situations. A person could wrestle over which cause which:

  • Did God set him up to be a prophet because he ministered unto the Lord? or
  • Did he minister unto the Lord because God set him up to be a prophet?

His mother had lent him to the Lord for this very thing, but his examples weren’t the best.

One important lesson I see is that we ought not prevent children from serving the Lord, even if we do not know for sure that they know the Lord themselves. Just what that ministry they can do may be varied upon the child and upon the situation of the church. I see he ministered unto the Lord before Eli. That means he was supervised.

It would be good to have a clear definition of what is ministry unto the Lord and clearly teach that to children and adults in church.
