Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
I wonder how many Christians today have terrible trouble with this lesson from Our Lord Jesus Christ?
Jesus had commissioned the seventy who returned with glowing reports of great ministry results.
Jesus informed them that, as a matter of ministry, He beheld Satan fall from heaven. He gave them such power, such effectiveness, and such protection as to decimate the work of the devil.
And then Jesus cautioned them. They must not rejoice in their power, their results, or even in Satan’s fall. They were to rejoice that their names are written in heaven.
My guess is that every professing Christian knows he is to rejoice most that He is saved. We’re “supposed” to report that as the best day of our life. But you’d have a difficult time believing it to be true from the tweets on Twitter they give come Sunday morning. It seems pretty apparent that what we’re rejoicing in is full houses, packed pews, salvation professions and baptismals stirred.
I am not terribly sure myself how to go on and on talking about my salvation without it seeming to be repetitive or self-glorifying. But I am sure our Saviour taught His disciples that it is much more worthy of rejoicing in that the results of our ministries.
