And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.
While the end of Joash is disappointing, his early reign is a blessing. About the time he was mature enough to make these sorts of decisions, he was minded to repair the house of the Lord.
Joash had lived hidden inside that house the first eight years of his life. During these years, Athaliah’s neglect of and hatred for that house resulted in that house being “broken up.”
- Joash became concerned about its repair
- Joash desired the repairs begin quickly and then
- Joash followed through to see that it was done
I’m thinking of so many young people I know who have practically been raised in the Lord’s house. What a testimony if they were to mature to take concern for God’s house, take up tools and resources for its upkeep, and follow through living for the Lord their whole lives.
Joash’s colossal mistake was that he remained faithful only so long as Jehoida was alive. The older men of God are a blessing, but they will die away. We need young men, not to change things up, but to carry on their spirit and their work.
