Acts 15:27 (KJV) Three Witnesses

Acts 15:27 (KJV)

We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.

The subject of the meeting at Jerusalem was critical. God had indeed opened the door of salvation to the Gentile people. Should they then be forced into subjection to the Jewish customs?

At the center of the controversy was the predominantly Gentile church in Antioch. Its two most traveled members, Paul and Barnabas, came to Jerusalem as delegates and as witnesses to the grace of God. The council was set, the evidence presented, and the sentence delivered. They would not burden the Gentiles with these customs except for reasonable and appropriate things for the faith.

Barnabas and Paul returned home to give the news. But they did not return alone. With them was:

  • A letter recording the decision and
  • Two men to verify the letter

There were the witnesses, the document, and the verification of the paper. Thus, three sources established the thing.

Important subjects must not be determined in secret and disseminated by coercion. These are the sorts of things that require openness, integrity, and many voices.
