Hebrews 4:1 (KJV) From Us to You

Hebrews 4:1 (KJV)

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

I note the change in person in the first verse of the chapter, from “us” to “you.” The remainder of the chapter is the inclusive “us.”

All of us ought to fear
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. No one is saved who hasn’t first come to fear the Lord. In this case, the fear is for others. All of “us” ought to fear for some of “you.”

God has left a promise to all of us

Though some people attempt to preach otherwise, the fact of the matter is that the promise of salvation, the payment of salvation, and therefore the potential of salvation is available to all of us. No one is excluded from the call to be saved. All who come to Him, He will in no wise cast out.

But some of you seem to come short of it

  • All of "us" ought to fear because some of "you" do not trust Christ and get saved.
  • All of "us" ought to pray, to witness, to give, to serve in such a way that more of the “you’s” in the world will come to Christ and be saved. Loved ones, friends, family, if they do not come to trust Christ, come short of the promise of rest in the Lord in eternity.

All in the “us” class ought also to fear for those in the “you” class who, though saved, “seem” to come short of it. Though they have professed Christ, their profession of Christ hasn’t reached the level of maturity it ought to have. We fear for them not because they could lose their salvation but because they have neglected it. They do not glorify God in it. They are not contributing to the salvation of others through it.
