Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
The entire chapter of Isaiah 6 is of judgment. Within just this verse, we see:
- A fire that devours
- A chaff that is consumed
- A root that is rotten and
- A blossom that is dust
It’s important to see the cause of this judgment. This verse says specifically it is because:
- They have cast away the law of the Lord and
- They have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel
These were the people who, of all those in the world, would have said they loved the Lord. The problem was that they could not say the same about His Word.
I have counseled with professing Christians who, in a pinch, have shouted out to me that they did not care what the Bible says; they wanted to do this or that. Once they cooled down, of course, they retracted their statement. But their choices in life continue to demonstrate the truth of what they had said.
Here’s the truth of it. Christians so love God that they want to know what God says. They love His Word every bit as much as they love the Lord. And true Christians love God so that they are loath to cast away His law.
They delight to do His will.
