For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.
The ancient Baptists were reticent to be involved with worldly governments. It is true that they lived in a different time. They knew nothing of a government “of the people, by the people.” As such, they saw themselves as citizens of heaven and strangers in the world. They strove to be good witnesses for Christ and a good testimony to those around them, but they backed away from anything resembling involvement with the affairs of this life.[1]
For nearly two hundred and fifty years we have had the blessing of living under this American experiment. We’ve had opportunities unmatched in history. But we’ve also become compromised because of it. It appears it’s time to pay the piper.
God said that those who are guided by leaders who “cause them to err” will be destroyed. Especially concerning to me is the reference to young men in the next verse. If I am somehow able to survive the calamity that looks to be coming, I am not so sure for my kids and grandkids.
Is there an answer? We probably will have to pay a price but then all believers before us did as well. The answer is simple. Stop trusting in this worldly system and return to an absolute dependence upon the Lord.
I believe our Lord will return at any time. If He does not come very soon though, I would like to help those who follow to live for and love the Lord. I believe that can only happen if we disallow evil men to lead us, and we follow only the leading of the Lord as He is revealed in the Bible.
[1] 2 Timothy 2:4 (KJV)
No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
