And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
Take note of this, many of those who criticize, abuse, and even kill Christians will believe they serve God in the doing of it.
- They will be sincere
- They will be passionate
- They will be zealous
But they will be wrong.
Jesus said these words to His followers that they would not be offended by this abuse. I’m thinking of the words of both Jesus and Stephen, “they know not what they do.”
Two significant lessons here:
The abusers do not know the Lord.
Regardless of their beliefs. No matter what they profess, they do not know the Lord. They think they do. They believe they are serving the Lord. But their violence proves otherwise.
Believers forgive their offenders
It is a key evidence of genuine faith. The violent were never true followers. Genuine followers follow Christ in forgiveness.
Don’t blame the Lord, don’t blame the Christian faith for the history of violence that appears to be in the name of Christ. That was and always has been a mark of false profession.
To find genuine faith, find those who were persecuted by professing believers and never lifted a hand back.
