And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
On the day of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote that the day should be celebrated in the future with fireworks and rejoicing. Just two hundred forty some years later, historians debate whether he referred to July 4th or July 2nd.
Generally, men memorialize events that have happened and are recognized as significant. Herein lies one of the many fundamental differences between God and man. God established the memorial of the Passover before the fact. Even as he instructed Moses in the steps the Hebrews should take to save themselves when the death angel passed by; He was proclaiming that this day would be the most significant of events in Israel’s history, to be memorialized and observed forever into the future.
We only see the present and the past. Occasionally we will have a hint that an event will be memorable. Never can we look into our future and choose that this event will be the one we set our clocks by for the rest of history.
Only God does that.
