And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the ward of his lord’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day?
The officers had worked for a Pharaoh so mighty he could have them in prison just because they offended him. They were in jail. And yet, Joseph could see they were sad the morning after their dreams.
Even under challenging circumstances, I observe that a man does not have to be sad. At least not every day. Joseph had every reason, I think, to be depressed and miserable. Indeed, he wished to escape prison and even took steps to that effect in the passage. But he wasn’t depressed beyond measure. He was still diligent, faithful, and full of faith.
Life brings difficulties our way. It’s not wrong to acknowledge them. It is not evil to take steps to get passed them. But we never have to be overwhelmed by them.
Faith in God and choosing to do right[1] will get us through.
[1] The baker had obviously done wrong.
