God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
We live in a time of terrific human pride, not unlike that of Sodom and Gomorrah.[1] One of those manifestations of pride is our lack of humility in spiritual matters. We think we can choose for ourselves how to worship and what to believe. God does give us the right to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience. I would never suggest we diminish that right. On the contrary, I would insist that we individually surrender it to a teacher.
Consider, The Bible says that God spoke to the fathers “by the prophets.”
- The fathers
- The founders of our faith
- The greatest men in the Word of God
God spoke to them “by the prophets.”
Couldn’t they have gone to God themselves? Yes. Indeed, they did. But they also submitted to the teaching and preaching of prophets.
- Proud men judged the prophets and rejected their message.
- Evil men slew those very same prophets.
But the fathers? God spoke to them “by the prophets.”
None of the prophets were greater than our fathers. But neither were the fathers too proud to hear from them and receive their message from God.
Sound faith always worships God according as God has convicted the conscience.
Sound faith always submits to teachers of God’s Word to guide their conscience.
[1] Ezekiel 16:49 (KJV)
Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
