Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Never did Jesus make a pretense that this would be easy. On the contrary, he explained the hardship of the mission very clearly and expressed in no uncertain terms the price of discipleship. Though multitudes would willingly enjoy the blessings of the presence of Christ: food, hope, and healing, that was not the end goal of Christ. It would be the few who would accept His call.
So, what would lead one to follow Jesus genuinely?
- He was hated in His own day
- He was poor, having no place to lay His head
- He was clear that the path He directed them was strait and narrow
- He was executed as a young man
What would lead one to genuinely follow this path?
It was the resurrection.
The only logical reason anyone would follow Christ was His resurrection. It’s the only reason anyone should follow Christ today.
But the resurrection is more than a reason to enter into the hardship of discipleship. The resurrection makes the decision not to illogical and without reason. The resurrection makes every claim of Christ about sin, hell, and heaven a reality. The resurrection makes every other path, no matter how easy, pleasant, or popular, a path to destruction.
As sheep in the midst of wolves. But then on the other side is eternal life.
The Power of the Resurrection: Why the Risen Christ Leads to Genuine Followers.
