Romans 16:20 (KJV) Simple Saints

Romans 16:20 (KJV)

And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

It occurs to me that Paul’s expression in Romans 16:19[1] sounds like God’s desire for Adam and Eve that they would abstain from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They already knew good because they knew the Lord. But the serpent’s good words and fair speeches deceived the heart of Eve, and the original couple lost innocence. Being simple, they were no longer simple concerning evil.

The way then to avoid this deception is to be wise[a] unto that which is good and obedient to Romans 16:17 (KJV)
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

My ideas were confirmed by reading John Gill, who wrote of this passage,
“… against these false teachers; since in a little time they might be assured of victory over Satan and these his emissaries: as it is before suggested, that the methods these men used to beguile weak minds were much like those that Satan used when he attacked our first parents, so here is a manifest allusion to what was said by way of threatening to him, “it”, the woman’s seed, “shall bruise thy head”, Genesis 3:15;[2] and which has had its accomplishment in Christ.”

Be obedient to “mark and avoid” those who teach contrary to what you have been taught from the Bible, and God will, soon, give you victory against those who teach contrary.

For purposes of the local church setting, God has set a pastor to teach His Word. Mark and avoid those who teach contrary to what your pastor teaches from the Bible. Like the serpent, those “good words and fair speeches” will likely come straight from the Bible. They may even hold an open Bible to prove to you they are right. If it contradicts what your God-given pastor teaches, be wise enough to mark and avoid them.

[1] Romans 16:19 (KJV)
For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.

[a] Too often those that are “simple” are the ones most easily led astray. They are so good natured they like people who are friendly but spend too little effort discerning the difference between “good words and fair speeches” and what is Biblical and sound.
Psalms 19:7 (KJV)
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. Proverbs 7:7 (KJV)
And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
Proverbs 27:12 (KJV)
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

[2] Genesis 3:15 (KJV)
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
