Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
I understand and agree with many of the theological exercises placed upon this text.
If we apply this passage to meat sacrificed to idols, the text has little to do with what we eat and much more with whom we worship.
There is the account of Peter and the sheet let down from heaven.
Acts 10:11-15 (KJV)
And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
There is also Paul’s teaching in 1Timothy 4:4 (KJV)
For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
Given that context, it could be considered blasphemy not to eat meat. I want to consider our text at face value. We know it is perfectly acceptable to eat meat. It can even be idolatry to believe it’s wrong to eat meat. This passage teaches us to put aside all arguments, good ones and bad, for the sake of another person.
It would be a wonderful world if we learned to care that much for others.
