I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.
God can hear our thoughts.
So, speaking audibly to God is unnecessary for him to hear. There are times, such as when we cry out to God in our bed, when it is most appropriate to pray silently. I imagine when Nehemiah prayed in the king’s presence; it was a silent prayer.
Neither do I expect that the Psalmist means public prayer.
The Bible speaks of such a corporate, public, and therefore audible prayer. That Jesus sometimes prayed publicly is evident in that the disciples could hear and record those prayers. The context of Psalms 77 insists that this prayer is both private and audible. That it is repeated tells us it is emphatic.
God’s Word doesn’t waste words.
That tells me that, though God can hear my silent cries and it is appropriate for me to have them, still there must be times I get alone in a place where I can speak to God with my voice.
Perhaps this is the best use of a prayer path or a private walk in the woods.
Find a place where you are often uninhibited to speak to God in an audible, “out loud” voice. Learn to be used to talking to the Lord as a Person present with you.
