Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.
This verse unquestionably speaks of Israel, brought out of Egypt, planted in the Promised Land, and led to take deep root and increase in numbers there.
- There was no question God placed them there
- There was no question they grew into a multitude there
- There was no question they learned to love it there
It became home. God gave it to them.
Psalms 80:10-11 (KJV)
The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.
She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river.
I can see this as having fulfillment even today. Israel is such a successful people. But the trouble, oh, the trouble they have faced.
Psalms 80:12 (KJV)
Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?
There is no answer to the “why?” given. There is just a response from the Psalmist,
Psalms 80:19 (KJV)
Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
Dwelling too much on the “why’s” of life serves little good purpose. What is productive and helpful is to trust God through the difficult patches and to turn back to God when we have drifted away.
