Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.
I’ve been taught that the vision of the valley of dry bones has to do with Israel being spiritually dead, dispossessed of their Promised Land, and suffering under the hands of the Gentiles. Hitler’s holocaust certainly left a multitude of Jews “dry bones.”[1] The Jews had sought opportunity to have a land of their own and especially[2] in the Promised Land for at least decades before the holocaust. Hitler’s horrendous acts just made it obvious that the Jews had to have a place to call their own.
From the standpoint of biblical prophecy, however, the Jewish resettlement in the Promised Land is not the “end all.” They have flesh and bones, but they have no life. They are for the most part unbelievers; they are almost entirely non-Messianic.
I must wonder how a Jew understands the prophecy of Ezekiel 37.
I have no way of knowing for sure that the Bible believer’s common understanding of the vision of the valley of dry bones (my understanding) is God’s ultimate and final fulfillment. What I notice is Ezekiel’s part in the vision. He was to preach to the bones while they were still bones. He was to preach to the bodies before they had breath. He preached to them trusting they would one day have life.
Too much ministry today focuses on preaching to those who already have life. We can become disappointed that the spiritually alive are less surrendered but we’re still preaching to the living. Where are the Ezekiels who will faithfully deliver God’s message to those who have no spiritual life?
