Acts 18:13 (KJV) Christianity and Authority

Acts 18:13 (KJV)

Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.

Albert Barnes writes, “It was easy for (the Jews) to maintain that he taught contrary to the laws of the Romans and their acknowledged religion; and their design seems to have been to accuse him of teaching people to worship God in an unlawful and irregular way, a way unknown to any of the laws of the empire.”

Religious people always wish to marry government and religion unless, of course, that government wishes to suppress their own religion. Paul did not persuade people to be lawbreakers but to be subject to authority. However, he did persuade men that Jesus was Christ and that faith in Christ would result in a new way of living. Christianity has produced a higher view of family life, more compassionate care of human life, better citizenship, and a more generous community.

There have been those who have corrupted the Christian faith, turning it into religion and marrying it with government. But the faith of the Bible should never be confused with that.
