For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
“TO THE UNKNOWN GOD."
Paul freely admitted that the people in Athen worshipped God but then said that they did so in ignorance. He preached Christ to them because to simply acknowledge that God exists, but then to insist that He is unknowable, is of no eternal value.
Today, we have agnostics who claim they can’t know whether there is or is not a God. They do not want to go so far as to proclaim themselves as atheists but neither do they wish to commit themselves to genuine faith. Their position is of no value.
Saving faith, eternal life, is found in knowing “the unknown God.” And He is not hard to find. We are all His offspring. He is near to every one of us. He has shown Himself in the Person of Jesus Christ.
Just as in Paul's time at the Areopagus, many mock the message of the resurrection. Many others dismissed it and put it off. But there are some today, just as Dionysius, Damaris, and others whose names we will not know until heaven, who believe.
God is knowable, and salvation is found only in the knowing. Jesus Christ is a literal, historical figure. There is documented evidence that He is God. There is infallible proof that He rose from the dead. He has promised to save all of those who come to Him.
Do that today!
