Romans 13:10 (KJV) Loving Like Jesus

Romans 13:10 (KJV)

Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

I had someone recently write to me complaining that Jesus told us to treat everyone with love and implying that by preaching the Word of God as I do, I am not showing everyone love. My answer to that person was that, though the Bible does teach us to treat everyone with love:[1]

·     Jesus called the Pharisees whited sepulchers.

·     Jesus told Peter, “Get thee behind me,” and

·  Jesus told Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again.”

To treat people with love often means that we reprove them, warn them, and urge them to accept the gospel of salvation.

Our text includes Romans 13:8-9 (KJV):

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

·     We ought to consider it a debt to love others.

·  We ought to understand that love is the fulfillment of the Old Testament Law.

·     We ought to work no ill to our neighbor.

In other words, to love another is to treat them the way we would want to be treated. But even this has a caveat: if the way we would want to be treated is not the Biblical way, then we still need to be corrected. True love would work no ill to a neighbor but would strive to see the best good for that neighbor—namely, that they live eternally forgiven of their sin.
