Romans 12:2 (KJV) Against the Grain

Romans 12:2 (KJV)

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

I believe we have a lot more trouble with this passage than we let on. That command to “be not conformed to this world” would make us different. It would put us at odds with everyone around us. It would make us, as the Bible puts it “a gazingstock.”[1] We might have trouble making friends, getting work, or getting promoted. How could we advance in our community if we were not like the people in our community?

This is one of those areas where we as Christians struggle. Are we to become “so heavenly minded we are no earthly good?” Is this one of those areas where our friends caution, "A little religion is all right, but don’t become a fanatic?"

God’s Word begs us, “I beseech you therefore, brethren” don’t be conformed to this world.  From there the chapter goes on to describe some of what ought to be different:

·       A member of the body, which is the local church.

·       A kind affection for the other members of that body.

·       A fervent servant in business and in the Lord’s work.

·       A happy soul in tribulation.

·       A generous soul to the needs of others.

·       A peaceable soul.

·       A good soul, not stooping to evil or getting even.

These and other qualities would mark us, make us different than the world around us. They would be mocked by many, but they would be applauded by the Lord.

Against the Grain: Traits That Please the Lord

[1] Hebrews 10:33 (KJV)

Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.
