But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man)
Peter said of the Apostle Paul, 2 Peter 3:15-16 (KJV)
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
While the message of the gospel is simple, plain, and easy to be understood,[1] the fact is that the details have such depth that we may spend our entire lives studying and find we have only discovered there is yet more to discover. I think one of the reasons people fight so much over doctrine is that they forget they have not yet got it all figured out. The key is not to quit believing and expressing the details of our faith, but to be less critical of those with whom we disagree.
Regarding our text, I can see:
• God’s grace is not accepted by some.
• God’s grace is slow to cast away those who have not accepted it.
• God’s grace is no excuse to judge God whenever His grace runs out.
The point of the passage is to demonstrate that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Therefore, there is none righteous (by their own works). And so, God’s grace has provided righteousness by faith in Christ unto all and upon all who believe.
