(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
I noticed that the Bible doesn’t say Abraham believed in God but that he believed God. The question of God’s existence wasn’t on the table.
God is. There is no doubt.
He speaks. There is no question.
The only question then is whether Abraham would believe what God said. This then is the same question put to you and to me. Arguments for or against the existence of God are irrelevant. There has never been a moment in the recorded history of mankind that men have not known God is. In every part of the world, and in every culture, it matters not whether it is Western or Eastern Civilization. It transcends into the superpower nations and the third world countries. Educated people and uneducated people alike have instinctively known God is.
The question has never been whether we believe in God. The question is whether we believe God. And this question accounts for all the differing ideas about God. Consider Cain and Abel. Neither man questioned the existence of God, but one believed God while the other did not. Over 6,000 years of history this same issue has been at work. Some believe God while others do not. Those who have not believed God have, just as Cain did, devised religions of their own liking. Those who believe God simply follow God’s Word as He has spoken.
Abraham believed a specific God - the One who quickens the dead and speaks things into existence. God spoke the heavens and earth into existence once. He made everything out of nothing. So, the question at play in the passage is, can God save those who do not believe God? The answer is that He can. He can call them to Himself as easily as He could create all things from nothing.
Believing God will change the way we live. It will change the way we view our world and those in it. Believing God will change the way we react in life events. Believing God will change the way we serve God. Believing God will change the way we pray. Believing God will change the way we witness. Believing God will change our heart toward those we see as not believing God.
Romans 4:3 (KJV)
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
