Romans 6:1-2 (KJV) No License to Sin

Romans 6:1-2 (KJV)

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

A common complaint many have with the Baptist doctrine of once saved, always saved is that it gives a person a license to sin. That’s not true. What is true is that the corrupt human nature is always looking for the easy way. The sinner who wants to escape hell but has no spirit to “reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin[1] has merely deceived themselves. To profess that you are a Christian, but to have no desire to “let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body[2] is a sure sign of a false profession.

None of us ever gain complete victory over sin in this life. We do not reach “sinless perfection” until we reach heaven. There will be reason until that day to practice 1 John 1:9 (KJV)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

And until that day we will be happy that. 1 John 2:1 (KJV)

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Nevertheless, the clear teaching of the Bible for the Christian is “these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.”

If the Holy Spirit of God witnesses to your spirit that you are a child of God, that same Holy Spirit will motivate, convict and empower you to resist the temptations to yield to sin.
