O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
While some people have argued that this chapter is Paul speaking as if he were not saved, they believe he is giving here the case of the lost man. They can thereby justify what they believe to be the experience of sinless perfection. A good reading of the text, I think, demonstrates otherwise.
What we see in the chapter is the struggle that every Child of God must reconcile himself to face. We, who are saved, wrestle with the two natures.
- We are saved, quickened. We have the Spirit of God dwelling in us.
- We are in the flesh, carnal. We have the corrupt human nature in us.
Galatians 5:17 (KJV)
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
This is the struggle described in Romans seven. Every Christian this side of heaven still wrestles with sin. The Christian problem is not that this battle exists. I think the problem arises whenever:
- We deny that the struggle exists within us, or
- We believe we can do something ourselves to win the battle.
The Apostle Paul expresses a truth too often overlooked in Christian circles. No one can deliver us “from the body of this death.”
No one, that is, except Jesus.

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
