2 Corinthians 1:20 (KJV) Yea and Amen

2 Corinthians 1:20 (KJV)

For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

This passage is to be found in the context of, 2 Corinthians 1:17-19 (KJV)

When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?

But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

The apostle was only a man and could not determine with preciseness the will of God. He wasn’t perfect. He might purpose to do a thing and God would prevent it. But Paul’s testimony among them, which he was sure at least part of them would confirm, was that

He took his ministry seriously,

He never purposed lightly, and

When he said something, it was, to the best of his understanding, true.[1]

Paul’s testimony, he said, was based on this truth, “…all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen…” What God does is true and consistent. What God promises is sure and unchanging.

Should not the followers of Christ be of the same mind and pattern?

Yea and Amen: Living in the Light of God's Promises

[1] This, of course, doesn’t apply to the written Word of God he penned. That is God-breathed and thus perfectly, assuredly, and absolutely true and without error. Surely any thinking man can agree that God’s use of him as a penman does not require that he was perfect when God was not specifically engaged in using him to write.
