And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
I suppose it is true of all people, but I am certain it is true of Americans. We love our liberty!
· We love cars—they give us liberty.
· We love our open road system—it gives us liberty.
· We love campers—they provide liberty.
· We want 40-hour work weeks—so we have liberty.
· We cherish open borders between states—liberty.
· We love our free elections—liberty.
Liberty was a rallying cry of our founders. Liberty is the fundamental doctrine of we who are conservatives. We want to be represented—liberty. We want choice—liberty.
I’m all for all of that. But here’s the rub. When the Lord came down to see what people had done[1] He was concerned they had too much liberty. God confounded their language to place some restraints on their liberty.
I remember as a young Christian parent learning the analogy of a well-fenced yard. Within the yard, children can be free to enjoy themselves, to play, to explore, to grow, and to learn. But outside the fence, there were dangers a child would not be prepared to encounter. Parents place boundaries, fences, and restraints around their children not to restrict their liberties but to protect them from danger.
Even so, God drove Adam and Eve from the Garden and the Tree of Life, not for judgment, but for their good. God confounded the language of men, not for an evil intent, but for their good. I believe an argument can be made that the Flood, as devastating as it was, was not meant for the harm of mankind but for our ultimate good.
· Has God shown you some Biblical boundaries? Rejoice in them.
· Has your church taught you some standards that seem strict and life-altering? Be thankful for them.
Inside the fence, there is great freedom. Outside, there is unimaginable danger.
