And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
My mind is immediately drawn to Hebrews 13:2 (KJV)
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
As the three men approached Abraham, it appears to me that Abraham did not recognize one of them was the LORD. I believe it to be a Christophany, a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ. Abraham saw three travelers, one of them obviously the leader of the trio, and Abraham, apparently not aware of who it was that “stood by him,” hastened to offer them a welcome and refreshments. It was not until after they had been cared for that the LORD offered him insight into their mission.
· It was only after Abraham had fed them that he received the reaffirmation of God’s promised child.
· It was only after he had dined and fellowshipped with them that God revealed to him His plan to visit and judge Sodom and Gomorrah.
· It was only then that Abraham offered to the LORD his very famous prayer for ten righteous souls.
Notice the order:
God approaches
He always reaches out to us first.
Abraham invites
God never forces Himself upon us.
Abraham offers fellowship and sacrifice
There is time and cost in a walk with God.
God reassures Abraham of His promise
He does that for us, you know.
God reveals to him a coming judgment
Those of us who read and believe the Bible know judgment is coming.
Abraham intercedes for others
The only appropriate response of the believer in light of God’s judgment is to pray and plead for others to escape that judgment.
