Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
The word "furthermore," in this case, clearly denotes a change in subject. The Word of God has moved from dealing with the brother, who had so badly sinned in the church, to a new subject. The Apostle, while explaining why he had not already returned to Corinth, claims he had:
- Gone to Troas
- For the purpose of preaching the Gospel and
- Found an open door
Paul’s ministry was an itinerant one. No one was ever led to believe he would continue with them indefinitely. His role was to preach the gospel, establish churches, and confirm them in due time.
Consider; the Apostle left the “open door” he had discovered in Troas out of concern for Corinth. He had not heard from Titus about the situation in Corinth, so he moved from Troas to Macedonia. His concern for an established church took precedence over his opportunities to preach the gospel in Troas.
Leading souls to Christ is important. Planting new churches is important. But, at least in this instance, preserving the doctrine and practice of an established church was the priority.
The Great Commission cannot be fully fulfilled without sound, established churches.
