That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
The problems in verses one through seven of this chapter are manifold. Some of them almost mythical[1] so that scholars, skeptics and Bible students debate what these things mean.
Among those many problems in the text there is one that is not a problem of interpretation but one of will.
The sons of God … took them wives all all which they chose.”
· They saw that they were fair
· They wanted them
· They chose them
Sounds like a scene from Samson to me.[2]
Jesus said the last days on earth would be days like those before the flood.[3] There would be marrying and giving in marriage – which, in itself, isn’t the trouble. But they would do it willfully and without the consult of God.
Remember Dinah, whom Shechem defiled?[4]
Forty years I’ve served the Lord as a pastor and in those years one of the most heart wrenching things I’ve witnessed is the propensity among people to marry and give in marriage without the counsel of God. Don’t be deceived. Sitting through a few counseling sessions with a pastor before the wedding is not the substitute for marrying the spouse of God’s choosing.
Since marriages are almost never these days ordained of God, the couple feel absolute liberty to end the marriage in divorce whenever they choose. This abomination has led to so many other alternate lifestyle abominations.
All the trouble in this passage began when the sons of God began to make their own choices.
We’ll see a revival when the children of God once again submit to the will of God.

Self-Willed Marriage: The Sons of God and the Daughters of Men
[1] Except they are not mythical. This is the infallible Word of God.
[2] Judges 14:3 (KJV)
Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
[3] Matthew 24:37-39 (KJV)
But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
[4] Genesis 34:1-2 (KJV)
And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
