(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
Our text confirms the deity of Jesus Christ based on the eyewitness accounts of His resurrection and, especially in this case, His ascension to heaven. In Paul’s argument, there is no dispute against the ascension of Christ to heaven. There were too many witnesses. They were too consistent. There was too much confidence in their faith for this to be denied. Now, based on the ascension, these conclusions may be drawn:
The One who ascended into heaven first descended.
Some might argue that the phrase “lowest parts of the earth” refers to hell. I believe it means that Christ left heaven to come to this earth, not into high society, but into a humble home. This provides evidence of His deity. He did not begin at Bethlehem, but His goings forth have been of old, from everlasting.
Micah 5:2 (KJV)
But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
The One who descended is the same who ascended.
It’s already been established that this is Christ. He descended from heaven. He lived the life of a man, tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin. He died for our sins. He rose again in victory over our sins and over death. And this same Jesus who descended, bled, died, and rose again - ascended to heaven.
· It was not a vision.
· It was not a metaphor.
· It was not a spirit form of Jesus.
Jesus Christ, who is all of God, left heaven, lived as a man, died a substitutionary death, rose again to life, proved Himself alive for forty days, and ascended back into heaven visibly, physically, literally.
Oh, and the angels promised that He is coming again exactly as He left.
Acts 1:11 (KJV)
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
