Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
It is appropriate, I think, in the current world climate, especially here in the US, but also in most of Western Civilization, to be reminded that “God is not mocked.”
Albert Barnes, quoting from Webster’s Dictionary, writes: “To mock is, properly:
1) To imitate, to mimic; to imitate in contempt or derision.
2) To deride, to laugh at, to ridicule.
3) To defeat, or to elude, or to disappoint.
4) To fool, to tantalize.”
Despite the evidence to the contrary, there is little doubt the lost world is deceived in this area. The mockery they project upon God, the Bible, and believers is incessant and seems to be growing in intensity. With each passing year, the lost seem to grow bolder against God, to the point that the believer might be deceived into thinking God allows them to mock.
The law is fixed:
“For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” In this instance, the law of sowing and reaping doesn’t cover how much is sown but of what sort is sown. “He that soweth to the flesh,” take that to mean mocking God, “shall of the flesh reap corruption.”
For the believer, this truth is rehearsed so we don’t forget the end of things. It’s not about how well life happens in this short visit to earth. What matters is the eternal destiny.
There is a “due season” coming.
It wasn’t yesterday. It may not be today. But there is a due season. Live for, look for, and sow for that season!
God is not mocked. That’s why the Word of God speaks of coming judgments:
· The Judgment Seat of Christ, where believers reap life everlasting.
· The Great White Throne Judgment, where the lost and the mockers reap the eternal corruption of the flesh in the lake of fire.
Hebrews 9:27 (KJV):
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.
As to the first part, there is no argument. It’s the second part to which the mockers of God object. Yet, object as they will, it does not change the fact nor diminish the urgency to prepare for it.
