Genesis 33:16 (KJV) Walking God’s Path

Genesis 33:16 (KJV)

So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.

Esau went to Seir, but Jacob went to Succoth.

Some commentaries suggest that Jacob must have gone to Seir and then to Succoth. I am not so sure. Jacob was a humble man; he did all he could to ensure that whatever tensions there might have been between him and Esau were entirely de-escalated. But it was never his intention, nor the will of God, for him to fall under the protection and hand of Esau.

·       He was his brother.

·       I am sure he must have loved him.

·       He was surely thankful to have peace with him.

But the birthright blessing, the heir of Abraham and Isaac, belonged to Jacob.

Brothers must make their own ways in this world. That’s certainly true of the one who is called of God.

I like that Esau and Jacob dwelt peacefully nearby for the rest of their lives. I like that both remained in the Promised Land.[1] I like the fact that they cooperated to bury their father, Isaac. But it is key to acknowledge that Jacob and Esau, two very different men spiritually, went in two very different directions. Jacob reconciled the wrong he had done to his brother, but then he went on to be the man God had called him to be—not the underling of Esau.

The man of God follows God. If he can do so with his family and next of kin, it is a double blessing. If he is not, his blessing is found in following the Lord alone.

Men are called to be leaders, not just in their homes, but in their communities and churches as well. Like Jacob, who took responsibility for his actions and followed God’s direction, men must stand firm in their faith and lead with integrity. Leadership requires humility, strength, and a commitment to God's will, even when it sets you apart. True leadership is not about dominance, but about guiding others toward God's purpose with love and conviction.
