Philippians 2:21 (KJV)
For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.
I do not believe the Apostle used superlatives, nor do I believe he had a critical or negative personality. Furthermore, the Holy Spirit was guiding his work in this epistle, and He is certainly not prone to exaggeration.
Speaking of Timothy, and recommending him to the church, Paul claimed there were none like him, then said, “For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.” That seems a little extreme—like a bit of a stretch. Among all the Christians Paul knew, right from the beginning of the church age, could it be that “all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's”?
If that was true in the Apostle’s day, how much truer must it be today?
I do not believe we should take this cynically. Rather, we ought to look at it realistically, introspectively, and as a charge. Though Paul said, “all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's,” there was one. There was Timothy.
And if there was one, there could be another.
The charge is to examine ourselves. The charge is to be another who seeks the things that are of Christ, and not our own.
