Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
I had a conversation with my mom this morning regarding the outcome of the elections. She began our regular morning talk by saying, “I’m not too happy about the elections, but I bet you are.” Actually, I don’t think either of us have much reason to be happy. The race for president went to the conservative candidate (which I favor), but the race for governor in Washington State went to the man I believe to be the worst possible choice for the welfare of our citizens.
In response, I told my mom that I don’t understand her choices. I know her to be pro-gun, pro-marriage, pro-American, and anti-open borders. She is conservative in every major platform position, yet she is a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, unwavering in her allegiance. Her explanation to me was that she remembers when her daddy—my grandpa—could barely make enough money to feed himself and his family. It was the Democrat Party that brought union labor to build the bridges and dams along the Columbia River, bringing a big change in her life. Big unions still favor the Democrat Party, regardless of any other platform positions, because they see Democrats as pro-union. To them, nothing else matters.
This got me thinking about what unions have done for the welfare of our country’s workforce. On one hand, unions seem to have been a huge help to the average worker, raising their standard of living and indirectly benefiting even non-union workers.
But at what cost? Unions have also made things difficult for small business owners and those striving to make it on their own. Union philosophy aligns with the grassroots ideals of communism. While unions may have improved conditions for workers for a time, they have gradually promoted a shift toward socialism and communism, opposing pure capitalism. How do we reconcile this juxtaposition?
• The worker needed better conditions. Unions appear to have given them that. but
• The course of humanity needs liberty. Unions seem to be depriving us of that.
Reading this passage in James, it struck me how concerned God is about these very issues. In a desperate attempt to free people from unfair employers, unions effectively took the place of God. No wonder socialism and communism are anti-God. No wonder God has not been welcome at Democrat rallies for years. Unions have decided that God failed them, so they’ve sought to replace Him.
In doing so, they may have improved conditions for a time here in the United States. But the eventual outcome will be far worse. Just ask those who have suffered under communism.
The answer to the plight of the worker?
Trust the Lord.
Be patient.
And pray.
