And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
I think it’s interesting how times have changed. Almost everything we read in this chapter would have been a non-issue today because, in our time, we likely would have never permitted the first miracle to even occur.
They had a house so full of people that no one else could squeeze in the door—the fire marshal would have a fit! Then, you’ve got four men tearing a hole in the ceiling. The church people wouldn’t stand for that. I can hear someone say, “If you people could really heal the crippled, we wouldn’t complain about the other things.”
I doubt that’s true.
Jesus did heal the crippled, and they just complained about that instead.
I’m not suggesting we ignore public safety in our church buildings. I just want to point out that the real problem people have is with the spiritual and moral implications of the Christian faith.
• Their problem was that He forgave sin (v. 5).
• Their problem was that He reached out to the lost (vv. 16-17).
• Their problem was that He called out their hypocrisy (vv. 21-22).
• Their problem was that He pointed people to the Lord, not to rituals (v. 27).
And I speak to people almost every day whose problem with the Christian faith is the same as theirs.
