And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
One can count on John Gill to have commented on—if not every verse in the Bible—almost every verse. And having done so, it’s amazing how much substance is in those comments. Never put down a preacher whose focus is the thorough study (and recording of said study) of the Bible.
My interest is in the fleeing of the feeders of the swine. All three Gospel accounts of this event say they fled.
• They didn’t resist Jesus.
• They didn’t rebuke Jesus.
They fled.
Gill writes that they fled, “being astonished at the power of Christ, affrighted at the noise of the devils, and terrified at the sight and loss of the swine…”
They fled, but they didn’t hide. The Bible says they told what Jesus did, both in the city and in the country.
They fled, scattered, and ran to tell others what they had witnessed.
It’s a natural reaction, I think, that the one who meets Jesus runs to tell others.
