Mark 6:7 (KJV)
And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;
I’ve always understood this to mean that Jesus sent the twelve out in pairs, all at the same time. However, this passage gives a slightly different mental image.
It says Jesus began to send them out. John Gill suggests, “He first sent forth one couple, and then another.” The instructions remained the same, but the timing of their commissions may have been staggered. Jesus was not left alone while all were gone; instead, one pair would depart, and then, perhaps as previously sent pairs returned, another would go. This created a continuous cycle of service, support, and resupply—someone preaching, someone praying, and someone sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing the Word.
Gill gives several reasons for sending them in pairs:
• Companionship – They would encourage and strengthen each other.
• Assistance – Two are better than one... (Ecclesiastes 4:9).
• Confirmation of Doctrine – In the mouth of two or three witnesses... (2 Corinthians 13:1).
• Faster Spread of the Gospel – More areas could be reached in less time than if they all
traveled as one group.
This perspective highlights the wisdom of Christ’s method—ensuring the work was constant, the workers were supported, and the message was confirmed. It’s a reminder that ministry is not a solo endeavor but a continuous cycle of service, prayer, and renewal. We, too, should embrace this model—going when called, supporting those in the field, and always returning to Christ for strength and direction.
