Matthew 24:2 (KJV) A Worldly Glory, Eternally Crushed

Matthew 24:2 (KJV)

And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

Jesus Destroyed Their World!

The disciples had just pointed out to the Lord the beautiful Temple Herod had built for them.

The Temple, it seems to me, was a perfect illustration of the spiritual condition of the Jews. It had biblical and godly roots, tracing back to the tabernacle in the wilderness, made according to God’s pattern. The Temple was originally the brainchild of the great king David. God did not permit David to build it, but he did collect much of the materials and wealth that would be used.

David also put it in the heart of his son, Solomon, to erect the Temple. Solomon added both materials and wealth, and the Temple, when finished, was by all accounts magnificent.

Solomon’s Temple was destroyed by Babylon and rebuilt over 70 years later by Zerubbabel. But there was no comparing the two.

Now, hundreds of years later, Israel’s king, Herod, was half Jew, half Edomite, and appointed by Rome. In an effort to keep peace, Herod spent something like 40 years building, expanding, and upgrading the Temple.

This temple was the product of worldliness. It was extravagant but had no heart for God. It pacified the religious, but it resulted in their pride.

Jesus crushed it.

He referred to His body as the Temple that would be rebuilt. He told them Herod’s Temple would be torn down to the stone. And they likened that to the end of the world.

What follows in Matthew 24 is a divine description of the destruction of just about everything a person might be proud of:

            His country

            His family

            His life

And it finishes with the coming of Jesus Christ.

There is no hope in this world. It’s all going to be consumed by fire. But there is eternal, everlasting hope and joy in Jesus Christ.

Get your eyes off the world and onto Jesus. They tried to destroy Him. But He rose again—victoriously, eternally, and for you and me.
