But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
I’m going to go out on this limb and claim, based on Matthew 25:46[1] that the kingdom of heaven parables, especially those in this chapter, are about eternal life and that eternal life is in heaven.
I’m going to go out on another limb and say, based on multiple Old and New Testament texts, that the oil is representative of the Holy Spirit of God, without which no one is saved.
• We are not saved by church membership.
• We are not saved by religious sentiments.
• We are not saved by good works of any type.
• We are not saved by how or where we were raised.
• We are not saved by our cultural, political, social, or ecclesiastical preferences.
• We are not saved through ordinances or sacraments.
We are saved only through the working of the Holy Ghost.
Titus 3:5 (KJV)
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
Since the five foolish virgins took no oil, they represent dead religion—of which the Jews of Jesus’ day were a part. They had the outward show of religion, but they had no inner conversion.
Scripture makes it clear that at the moment of our salvation, the Holy Spirit of God fills us, indwells us, and seals us until the day of redemption.
We have enough oil.
But we can’t share it.
This isn’t selfishness or thoughtlessness. It’s a picture of the spiritual truth that salvation is a personal matter. I can’t be saved for anyone else. I can tell them about the One who saves, but I can’t save them. They must come to Christ alone, personally, of their own accord.
They must come before it is too late. The Bible is clear about this: there comes a point when it is too late. We are taught to always be ready.
It is wise, therefore, to make ready—if one hasn’t already—today.
