Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones.
When one is careful to read the Word of God, even the smallest details can be the tool the Holy Ghost uses to bring about a lesson for our profit.
I note the word "again." It simply indicates a continuation or repetition of something. But when God chooses to repeat a command, it is worth stopping to contemplate why.
The command not to give their seed (children) to Molech was first given in:
Leviticus 18:21 (KJV)
And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.
"The false god Molech was worshipped by heating a metal statue representing the god until it was red hot. A living infant would then be placed on the outstretched hands of the statue, while the beating of drums drowned out the screams of the child as it burned to death." (David Guzik)
Guzik’s commentary on this passage begins with the following reference: “Whereas Leviticus 18 addresses the would-be offender of a God-given decree, Leviticus 20 addresses the Israelite community, which was responsible for seeing that violations of the Law receive their just reward.’ (Mark F. Rooker)”
It is worth remembering that, while each of us will stand before God and give an account of ourselves, we are always part of a community:
· The family to which we belong
· The nation of which we are citizens
· The church of which we are members
I am responsible for my personal walk with God, but I am also responsible for my role within these communities.
· As a father, I must lead my family in the ways of righteousness.
· As a citizen, I must be aware of my government’s policies and use the legitimate means at my disposal to influence those policies in righteousness.
· As a member of my church, I must participate in its mission to win souls, bring them to God’s house to be baptized, and encourage fellow believers to observe all that Christ has commanded.
