Luke 6:1 (KJV) What Does It Mean?

Luke 6:1 (KJV)

And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

After listing several ideas regarding what “the second sabbath after the first” means, Gill writes: "What seems most likely is that this sabbath was, as it may be rendered, 'the first sabbath after the second'; that is, the first sabbath after the second day of the Passover."

Barnes feels compelled to give what he believes to be “the most natural and easy explanation”, which he attributes to Scaliger: "The second day of the Passover was a great festival, on which the wave-sheaf was offered (Lev. 23:11). From that day, they reckoned seven weeks, or seven Sabbaths, to the day of Pentecost. The first Sabbath after that second day was called the ‘second first,’ or the first from the second day of the feast."

The Biblical Illustrator is perhaps the most honest, simply stating, “All explanations of it must be conjectural,” yet even it proceeds to offer two explanations it considers most likely.

Since many take it upon themselves to propose what they believe to be the most plausible explanation, I believe I have just as much right to do so. The most natural understanding is that this refers to the second Sabbath of that particular month. The focus is not on which Sabbath it was, but rather on the fact that it was a Sabbath.

This account concludes with:

Luke 6:5 (KJV)

And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

That was the point—regardless of which specific Sabbath one identifies, the Son of Man is Lord also of that Sabbath.

The following verse begins a separate account but reinforces the same lesson:

Luke 6:6 (KJV)

And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

Whether it is the first Sabbath, the second Sabbath, another Sabbath, or one of the Sabbaths of the great feasts, the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”
