Luke 17:6 (KJV) Be Thou Plucked Up

Luke 17:6 (KJV)

And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

Albert Barnes writes, “The mustard seed was the smallest of all seeds. It has been supposed by some, therefore, that he meant to say, ‘If you have the smallest or feeblest faith that is genuine, you can do all things.’ The mustard seed produced the largest of all herbs. It has been supposed by others, therefore, to mean, ‘If you have increasing, expanding, enlarged faith, growing and strengthening from small beginnings, you can perform the most difficult undertaking.’ There is a principle of vitality in the grain of seed stretching forward to great results, which illustrates the nature of faith. Your faith should be like that. This is probably the true meaning.”

John Gill writes that it isn’t necessary for believers to literally move mountains or trees, but that they would be able to accomplish things equally difficult. By faith, Christians have done some of the most challenging things imaginable. I think of those who have given their lives in slow, torturous ways without profaning the name of Christ—what could be more difficult than that?

But then I am reminded of a challenge given, I believe, to D.L. Moody: “The world has yet to see what God can do through one man wholly surrendered to Him.” Though it is said that Moody took up that challenge, I am certain we might still say today, “The world has yet to see what God can do through one man wholly surrendered to Him.”

And I am certain as well that the world has yet to see what might be accomplished by just one believer with faith as a grain of mustard seed.

The challenge stands. Who among us will seek such a faith?
