1 Corinthians 11:13 (KJV) Culture Clashing with Scripture

1 Corinthians 11:13 (KJV)

Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?

I’ll admit—this verse is challenging, not because it’s unclear, but because our culture has moved so far from even considering it. Today, most folks wouldn’t think twice about women praying uncovered. Whether you believe, as I do, that the covering refers to her hair, or like my friends in some Russian Baptist churches, that it means a scarf or head covering—either way, it’s simply not an issue most people are willing to wrestle with anymore.

In fact, our culture isn’t troubled by women praying uncovered. Our culture would have more trouble with teaching on the subject at all than they would with women not having some form of covering.

What people would judge as “uncomely” these days is the principle of judging.

And that’s the real issue.

Joseph Benson noted, “Those who are referred to here by the apostle were contentious, not conscientious persons.”

The problem today isn’t about hats or hair—it’s about hearts.
Are we contentious—resisting God’s order?
Or are we conscientious—reverently submitting to it?

Does the man honor his God-given role as head?
Does the woman humbly embrace her role under God and her husband?

It’s not just about appearance. It’s about obedience.

The conscientious person strives for that.

The contentious one fights it.
