But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
I think we sometimes imagine that we’re the only people who have ever faced the spiritual challenges of our age. We live in a dark time—a time of deep denial of the spiritual truths found in the Word of God. Those who rise up against our faith, who boldly preach their doctrines of evolutionary science, and who rest so securely in their belief that there is no God, no resurrection, no life after death, and no consequences for their actions—these voices seem to overwhelm the world stage.
But we need to remember: history is filled with evil.
Men like Alexander the Great have always held the earthly power.
Jesus Christ lived in a time when preaching like His could be silenced in just over 33 years.
It’s no great surprise, then, that so many deny the resurrection.
It’s not even surprising that some who do so claim to be of the Christian faith.
To counter this in his day, the Apostle Paul began first with the evidence—the witnesses. One may choose to believe them or not, but the fact remains: the witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus are substantial. Their testimony would be sufficient to hold up in a court of law. It’s more substantial than most any event of ancient history that goes unquestioned in our time.
Having established the witnesses, Paul then simply proclaims:
“But now is Christ risen from the dead.”
- It’s not haughty.
- It’s not arrogant.
- It’s bold.
- It’s confident.
- It’s matter-of-fact.
“But now is Christ risen from the dead.”
From there, he develops the doctrine, teaches the order, and finally, makes application.
It’s a fact.
Some deny it. Others ignore it.
But it’s still a fact.
“But now is Christ risen from the dead.”
